WordPress and rel="external nofollow"
I've just noticed that WordPress has rel="nofollow" set by default for comments.
rel="nofollow" was a good idea by the search engines to prevent spam. I just don't like the idea of there being no option to enable or disable it in WordPress.
Anyway, I've installed a plugin called 'DoFollow' and that seems to have corrected the problem

I never installed a comment spam fighting plugin on my first blog, and it would get literally 500 spam comments per day. As long as you’ve got something in place to stop the spam, and make sure people don’t spam comments I think sharing link value is a good concept.

I'm just using the Akismet spam protection. It seems to be working well. Although I've only had 3 spam posts attempted (and sucessfully stopped)

Yes.. not only wordpress uses a nofollow, wikipedia now also uses the nofollow tag, so, ALL outgoing links are nofollow!!
When does this insanitly finally end…?

I have just instaled wordpress on my new website and its fantastic. Like you said it does have a no follow attribute and i can see why, due to all the spam we get. However its not that obvious to poeple who are not so web savvy like me and you.
Maybe it is game over for blog spamming now?

The attribute rel=”external nofollow” doesn't stop comment spam but it does remove the search engine value of links.
It's like turning in your homework assignment late - you did the required work but receive no credit for it.

I've been wondering if there's any difference between rel="external nofollow" and rel="nofollow"
do u guys know about?
thanks.

Akismet is more powerful at stopping spam I think. Receiving comment info on your mailbox is often a pain in the head itself.

KiLotr, from what I've been reading, I think 'external no-follow' and 'no-follow' are essentially the same. The 'external' part just tells the bots that it's an external link (as opposed to an internal link)
correct me if I'm wrong though…

Do Follow is a actually great way for encouraging people to comment on your post. This works only if you have moderation enabled .. and almost everybody has moderation enabled by default.
Now if rel='external' is present their then the motivation gained by DO Follow actually evoporates.

yeah… those stupid wiki’s!
wonder what happen if we all use nofollow to them?
Have a good one.

Whoa, I didnt know Wikipedia started using nofollow(I'd been planning to get free wiki backlinks :p)
But now that you mention it, I'll be sure to nofollow all linked to wikipedia, they're rather highly ranked anyways ..

I have just started using this a couple of days ago, so to early to tell yet. Installed a simple math question in the comment form which killed spam stone dead!
I will let you know how I get on..

Why do wordpress set the default to nofollow instead to turn off the comment by default.
January 5th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Don't know why wordpress set default to nofollow. But i thing its great idea for prevent backlinks. I just used akismet to prevent spam
January 12th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
I use akismet as well and it works, so no worries for me. Great post.

It has long been thinking about it … thanks for the link http://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/dofollow/
March 1st, 2008 at 3:21 pm
if you are just leaving a replysomewhere, is it possible to activate "dofollow" or just the owner of the blog can do it (if ever)?
March 7th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I don't have a firm opinion about this. On one hand, NoFollow prevents spam. OTOH, links help to rank pages. Do you want to leave the right of linking only to webmasters?
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:51 am
If everybody used dofollow plugin, it will be a different world.
April 29th, 2008 at 8:01 am
If every blog have dofollow, i think it will make google confuse to calc for the PR
June 5th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Looking at current trends dofollow seems to be getting pretty popular, so they may add it as a built-in option. The only reason I see them maybe not doing it is because wordpress is supposed to be the bone structure of a site and plugins and such are supposed to be the meat, the add-ons.
July 10th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I think if you want to fight spam, you may put something like captcha on your comment system.
DoFollow is good for everyone, because bad site with no content won't be popular even if owner of this site post's many links through dofollow blogs…

Im still looking for a plug that will nofollow archive links………..

What about rel="external" links? Do they count as a backlink?
