Alexa Report Country Usage: Big Inaccuracies
After reading on both Connected Internet and Techtites that Alexa had introduced some more statistics for me to look at (sorry, I like stats) I quickly rushed to check Alexa. While the stats for most of my sites seemed 'pretty normal' that soon changed when I checked the stats for The Rockstar Game.

As that shows, therockstargame.com users primarily come from Lithuania (34.6%), Portugal (26.9%), United States (15.4%). I know that's not the case, so I logged in to Google Analytics and checked the past week, and that gave me the following….

As you can see that paints a completely different picture.
Obviously the Alexa data is based upon users with the Alexa Toolbar installed but it suprises me that it can be so out. The 2% of visitors from Lithuania over the past week is a pretty solid figure over the past year… clearly Alexa is 'big in Lithuania'

There are some things I really hate about Alexa. For one, you can't get the toolbar with firefox, which completely rules out almost the entire web development and web savvy community; the ones who really would have the use for using it. However, since reading a few blog articles about how dropping the website widget on your site will send Alexa data similar to what the toolbar would gather, you can smooth out the stats the Alexa provides. I gave this a test on one of my sites and my ranking almost instantly dropped 20,000 (good.) If you don't like the ugly widget on the site you can just do style="display: none;" and make it so it doesn't render, but the data is still sent. I'm using this technique with some of my clients who are eager to increase(really I guess its decrease) their Alexa rankings.

Alexa most of the time is an inaccurate piece of junk. It's best to take it's numbers with a grain of salt. The only stats you can really trust are the ones you keep yourself unfortunetly.
