New AdSense Ad Unit/Link Unit Combo

Over the past couple of days I've been noticing, on Gig Lovers, Google testing a new type of Ad Unit.

AdSense Ad Unit/Link Unit Combination

It seems to be a combination of the regular Ad Unit and a Link Unit as you can see by the screen cap to the right. I like the idea - you get the best of both worlds ;)

The URLs appear to be different than usual, with the target "javascript:gurl('long_id_here')" - obviously a sign of Google testing and analysing the clicks.

It would be interesting to see if these new ad units increase CPM and I'm hoping Google will let us have the option to use them sometime soon so I can get relevant channels set up and report back my findings.

Facebook on the iPhone

A Facebook engineer has posted news of the new, specially designed, Facebook web interface for the iPhone.

I have to say it does look impressive and I am struggling couldn't find a bad word about it anywhere.

It's all very easily browsed with the navigation at the top with a sliding horizontal scroll between them.

The new iPhone interface can be accesed by browsing over to http://iphone.facebook.com while those of us without such a device can still head over to http://m.facebook.com on our mobiles.

Personally, I can live without accessing Facebook from my phone.  I think, like the iPhone itself,  it's a neat toy but it's not something I'd use on a regular basis - the Nokia N95 is more useful anyway ;)

Increase AdSense CTR/CPM with Section Targeting

I've found the most effective way to increase your AdSense CPM and CTR, without being “Smart Priced”, is by having AdSense show ads relevant to the page.

For this, Google has to know what the page is about and it does this by looking at a number of things such as the URL and the domain names general topic trend.

However, the most important part is the page content itself, and while you may have written a great article, other page elements may be causing AdSense some confusion and end up influencing the ad shown in a detrimental way.

To combat this you can use ‘section targeting’ to filter out any unnecessary page content. Some areas of the page you might want to consider 'filtering out' are:

  • Headers
  • Footers
  • Navigation
  • Comments (Possibly)

Implementing Section Targeting

Implementing Section Targeting is relatively simple if you’re comfortable editing your HTML.

You simply need to wrap the content you want AdSense to take the most notice of in the following.

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

To tell AdSense to IGNORE content, you should wrap it within:

 <!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

As you can see, it's implementation is pretty simple, but it can make huge differences to ad relevancy and therefore your AdSense CPM and CTR - which are both things you should be aiming to improve, at all times.

So, if you haven't already, implement section targeting as soon as possible!

Former AllOfMp3.com Owner Found Not Guilty

The former owner of the infamous AllOfMp3, Denis Kvasov, was today found not guilty of copyright infringement and so no longer faces a lengthy prison spell.

The site, which had an estimated revenue of US$30 million a year, priced downloads at $0.03 per megabyte causing outrage from Western countries and companies (from Visa to the RIAA).

It seems another site, mp3sparks.com, which popped up back in April is run by the same team.

More Browsing With Windows 98 Than Vista Part 2

In March, I noticed that more people were browsing my websites with Windows 98 than with Vista.

Vista was released, worldwide, on the 30th January 2007. So it had been around for just a couple of months when I wrote about it so I decided to do a follow-up.

I’ve used the same site as my earlier post, over the same period of time.

Platforms 1st April 14th August
Windows XP 93.94% 88.76%
Windows 2000 2.37% 1.50%
Windows 98 1.53% 0.79%
Vista 1.37% 8.36%
Server 2003 0.47% 0.26%
ME 0.28% 0.33%

As you can see, that's quite a significant increase in 4 months.

So, what's your operating system? Are you happy with it?

I use XP Professional and I won't be upgrading to Vista until I get a new PC because, quite simply, I've no real need to - XP does everything I want. I use XP Professional mostly for IIS and so I can test and develop my websites and applications without the need to use my dedicated server. It certainly saves a hell of a lot of time FTPing and refreshing!
